More Distractions.

I actually made myself watch Reverend Wright’s entire speech to the National Press Club, if only because I know whatever he said would be reduced to soundbites and snippets and I actually wanted to hear what he had to say.

He had a few good points. He discussed the history of the Black American Church and the experience therein. He highlighted his own patriotism and service and did this all with charisma and humor.

Also with arrogance and with no apparent thought whatsoever as to how this would negatively effect Senator Obama’s campaign.

Ebonics? Really? Did I wake up in 1995? Are we still arguing over that? And is it really a good idea to make fun of our beloved President Kennedy and his Boston accent? Is this helping to bring the country together?

And to top if all off, he had the most ridiculous questions asked of him. Most of them were leading and ridiculous such as:

“In light of your widely quoted comment damning America,    do you think you owe the American people an apology? If not, do you think that America is still damned in the eyes of God?”

“In your understanding of Christianity, does God love the  white racists in the same way he loves the oppressed black American?”

“Do you think it is God’s will that Senator Obama be president?

First of all, it’s a shame that news of this even saw the light of day. And for those who would say this is only helping Hillary, I don’t believe it’s helping anyone and that includes the Black American Church. We have serious problems within this nation’s government and its relationship with America’s various cultures. We need people who are going to be serious about these issues and not attempt to make light of the situation or be so arrogant that our news outlets would do nothing but mock them.

Second, I realize that this is what constitutes news these days. But maybe all of the media could somehow ban together and decide that it wasn’t going to perpetrate these gross distractions that are only serving to harm our political process and numb the minds of the average America.

Yeah, I know. A girl can dream.
